Chancellor references Leicester innovation in growth speech

Chancellor John Healey today cited Leicester as an example of innovative excellence in his landmark Growth Speech.

In his first major address as chancellor, Mr Healey said his mission was to "make Great Britain growth Britain" again.

Speaking at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry, the Chancellor said: “Our UK formula works: local leaders working with world-class universities, investors, local businesses have created clusters of innovation across the UK - not just in Oxford and Cambridge but in Leicester, Swansea, in Strathclyde, Newcastle, in Manchester and in Rotherham. As a result, we are world leaders in frontier technologies.”

Leicester and Leicestershire has developed a strong innovation ecosystem over recent years. 

The Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership (LLEP) appointed an Innovation Board and became one of the first UK regions to go through MIT’s Regional Entrepreneurship Accelerator Program (REAP).

The LLEP’s MIT REAP report envisaged Leicester and Leicestershire’s economy growing by 5-10% above the national average.

That led to a local Innovation Strategy, and then the creation of the Innovative Leicestershire brand. Its aim was to develop a high-performing economy comprising existing and emerging innovation clusters.

Innovative Leicestershire continues to work with the Business Gateway Growth Hub to lead the Leicester Innovation Festival and the Leicestershire Innovation Awards.

Dr Nik Kotecha OBE DL, founder of Devolution Leicestershire partner RandalSun Capital, chaired the Innovation Board until the closure of the LLEP in 2024.

“Leicester has built a reputation for innovation,” he said. “The fact it has done so is an example of what can happen when the Government entrusts local people to make decisions about their own area.

“The words from the Chancellor in his speech at the MTC show the impact of work completed by local and regional bodies such as the Innovation Board. 

“The business-led focus on innovation convened a number of key local industry, public and non-profit players and played a key role in delivering devolved projects.

“As I described recently, that work continues to resonate today - and shows clearly that Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland is more than capable of delivering its own economic growth projects.”
