'We need to be clear that we are ready to take powers'

Further support for a Devolution deal in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland was offered as leaders from local universities, councils and businesses met to discuss the region’s economic future.

Introducing Competing to Win, an Economic Growth Summit for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, Andy Reed OBE, made the case for a Regional Mayor. 

He told delegates: “We know our areas better than anyone else.

“We know our history. 
We know our culture. We know our local communities.”

The invite-only conference was set against the backdrop of Devolution and the powers it unlocks and will encourage discussions on policy intelligence, future-focused thinking, senior connections and shared action. 

It focused on four themes: innovation, technology and productivity; investment, assets and wealth building; people & society and sustainable growth. 

Addressing the room of around 60 delegates, Mr Reed underlined the need for action.

“For me, now there is a golden opportunity to ensure that we have a unified voice to governments, a show,” he said. 

“We need to be making it clear that we are ready to take the powers that potentially are coming. You don't get these opportunities often and we don't want to be any further behind in this process. 

“We're already a couple of years behind our neighbours and others with this.”

Reflecting on his own view of the current situation, Mr Reed said: “Having known Andy Burnham for 20 odd years, I know this is a genuine passion for him, the agenda that's now unfolding. 

“So this concept - Rewiring The State - is not just a project, it is a fundamental way to allow  communities to take control of what we have and it really is a massive opportunity.”
